BOBBY LASHLEY
Franklin Roberto Lashley is a 47-year-old professional wrestler from Junction City, Kansas. He wrestles under the ring name, Bobby Lashley, on WWE’s SmackDown brand.
Lashley began his amateur wrestling in the seventh grade. He continued wrestling in high school and then at Missouri Valley College, he was the 1996, 1997, and 1998 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Wrestling Champion in the 177 lb category.
After college, he enlisted in the army where he continued to compete in amateur wrestling in the army’s World Class Athlete program. While in the army, Lashley won a gold and silver medal in the International Military Sports Council senior freestyle wrestling event.
In 2003, Lashley continued training in amateur wrestling and was working towards the goal of qualifying for Team USA to wrestle at the 2004 Olympic Games. While at a bank, Lashley witnessed a bank robbery and injured his knee while diving to avoid gunshots. He required surgery to repair the injury and was unable to continue amateur wrestling.
Bobby Lashley’s WWE Debut
In 2005, Lashley wrestled several dark matches for WWE live events on both RAW and SmackDown. He made his televised WWE debut in September 2005 and defeated Simon Dean in his first match. Lashley then began a winning streak defeating various superstars. In April 2006, he won his first battle royal and then competed at WrestleMania 22 in the Money in the Bank match that was won by Rob Van Dam.
Lashley entered SmackDown’s King of the Ring tournament and made it to the finals after defeating Mark Henry and Finlay. But at the final round, which was held at the Judgement Day PPV, he was defeated by Booker T. In July 2006, Bobby Lashley defeated JBL for the United States Championship but lost it to Finlay less than two months later.
In November 2006, WWE assigned Lashley to the company’s Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) brand. A month later, he won the ECW World Championship. Lashley successfully defended his title against numerous competitors including Big Show, Rob Van Dam, Test, Hardcore Holly, Kenny Dykstra, and Mr. Kennedy. He lost the title to Vince McMahon in January 2007 but regained it a second time.
Lashley was released from his contract by the WWE in February 2008. He returned to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in 2009 and also wrestled on the independent circuit for several years.
